How it’s worked out
With max heart rate, each zone is a 10 % band of it: Z1 from 50 to 60 %, Z2 from 60 to 70 %, and so on up to Z5, from 90 to 100 %.
Heart rate reserve (Karvonen) takes your resting heart rate into account: each zone is a band of the gap between max and resting, added to the resting rate. It usually fits better if you are fit.
With threshold heart rate, the zones are percentages of it, with the same cut-offs Garmin uses for running. It is the most accurate method if you know your threshold.
They are the same templates LT2 offers coaches for their team: from 3 zones (polarised, Seiler) to 7 (Friel). You can move the limits to make them your own.
